Are celts in your own heritage?

My ancestry is Celtic, French, Native American, and German. I am somewhat of a melting pot. Genealogy is fascinating although I have basically been a beneficiary of research done by relatives. When I have more time, I'd like to delve into it myself.

    Ouija boards

I haven't used a Ouija board since adolescence, and I wouldn't use one now. There's more than enough anecdotal evidence to prove to me that entities on a different plane of existence need no invitation. So, I wouldn't encourage them. Ouija boards might not be dangerous, but they could certainly...

"insert celcebrity name here" is dead

Unfortunately, we will probably be living with these hoaxes as long as there are celebrities and fans. In this case, fans really live up to the origin of the word which is fanatic. The irony is that once a celebrity truly is dead, there are numerous "sightings" of them alive and well. By last...

    Political discourse

Do you believe that political discourse is substantively worse now? My feeling is that the form has simply changed. Two hundred years ago, they had duels. Today, we have robocalls and tweets.

How long to keep the tree up?

I'm thinking of leaving mine up until February. Then, maybe I'll remove the ornaments and decorate it with pink hearts. ;) Thus far, I am just not feeling an iota of motivation to even touch the tree.

Getting kids to read egyptian history

Nothing on the screen will ever replace books, at least not for me. I love films and I appreciate the arts and creativity in its various forms. However, if I had to choose between a world of books and a world of video, I would choose books without hesitation.

    Titanic anniversary

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Titanic which sunk on April 15. It was a tragedy in so many ways, most especially the class system that essentially determined who would live and who would die.

    History channel in name only

After looking at their programming schedule, it looks as if the history is during the day with the reality taking over in the evening. Afternoon programming includes a Clash of the Gods "double feature" with Hercules and Thor. Two others I'd like to watch are Journey to 10,000 BC and Ancient...

    History channel in name only

My timing must be abysmal and I just happen to catch all of the Junk TV. Last year, the History Channel had a fascinating documentary series called Life After People. I hope they rebroadcast The Third Reich. I just checked the History Channel's website to see what was airing. Pawn Stars...

Anyone watch the old episodes of frasier?

One of my local stations airs Frasier nightly and I catch it every once in awhile. These are first-run episodes for me since I didn't watch it when it originally aired. I find it to be very funny. Seinfeld, on the other hand, never had much appeal for me.

    History channel in name only

What has happened to the so-called History Channel? Every time I take a look, they are airing some dreadful show like Ice Truckers. It's a mystery as to why they even bother to call it the History Channel anymore.

    Fairies

The baby's laugh is one of my favorite versions of the origin of fairies. The first time a baby laughed, his laugh broke into thousands of pieces. Each one became a fairy.

    Tristan and iseult

Tristan and Iseult, or Isolde as it is in some versions, is one of the most interesting Celtic stories. For anyone who is familiar with it, do you think it influenced the story of King Arthur and Geneviere?

Getting kids to read egyptian history

CuriousAlice's recommendation for taking him to a museum is a wise one. If they have interactive learning exhibits, that's the ideal environment. If a child feels part of something, he or she will want to learn more about it.

Is anyone as sick of this one as i am

Some people will believe almost anything if they hear it or see it in print enough times. There are three things in life that are certain: death, taxes, and free Facebook.

    Roman mythology in high school

My introduction to mythology, both Roman and Greek, was in high school. I loved studying it and, fortunately, I had a wonderful teacher. It seems bizarre that mythology isn't valued as an important aspect of education today. It offers so much to open minds!

    Inanimate objects and souls

One of the most interesting Native American myths is the belief that everything, including inanimate objects, possesses a soul. From what I understand, it's a fairly pervasive belief among Native Americans rather than one originating from a particular tribe.

    Speaking of christmas

Wasn't Saint Nicholas the patron saint of children? I'm fairly sure that he was the inspiration for Santa Claus. My favorite incarnation was Edmund Gwenn in Miracle on 34th Street. That's always been one of my favorite movies.

    Favorite period?

I like the way you think, RLynn. Technological advancements are becoming almost exponential. We can only imagine what our world will be like twenty years from now. And those warts are magnified by the 24/7 media. I love history but would not want to have been born at any other time.

    Climate change

I don't believe that climate change qualifies as a myth. It's based in science although I don't think it's scientifically proven either. The earth does go through unimaginably long cycles. Having said that, the depletion of the ozone layer raises concerns for me.
