    Tartarus

Tartarus is a place lower than Hades in the earth. It's worse than Hades so I'm wondering if this could relate to Dante's levels of hell? Not that we'll know where he got the idea but this is the first I've heard of more than one layer predating Dante.

    Climate change

Some people are referring to climate change as a myth. I think whether you believe it will be the end of us or not I'm not sure I'd call it a myth-maybe an urban legend. ;) I believe it exists but I don't believe it's going to do any damage in anyone's life who is currently alive. I trust future...

    The dresden files

I'm reading Ghost Story by Jim Butcher. It's part of his Dresdon Files series. DF was also a TV series for a short while. Has anyone read it? It's about a wizard and his adventures in the modern world.

    The fall of rome

I was reading Vonnegut's Timequake and he said that one of the reasons given for the fall of Rome was that they used lead pipes and lead poisoning can make you stupid and lazy. As good a reason as any.

    A discovery of witches

Deborah Harkness has written a great book that's a cross between Stephanie Meyer and Anne Rice. It's a story about a witch and a vampire getting involved and bucking the system. I got it in large print from the library and it's 861 pages and I can't put it down.

    Benzene in cars?

This is more of an urban myth than a legend but did anyone here get the email about how there is benzene in car seats, air fresheners and the dashboards of cars that release poisonous gas and so the windows should always be opened? Maybe we should start a separate section for idiot emails going...

    Chimera

Chimera is from Greek mythology. It's made up of a lot of different animals but more recently I've seen it be the name of an assissin--in more than one book. It's also the name of an almost-invisible being that lived in a the dark and wanted only to kill. Does anyone have any idea how it morphed...

    Beavis and butthead return?

Oh my. I'm glad the Simpsons was renewed but I don't think I'm going to be able to stand my nephews going around chuckling like Beavis and Butthead. Talk about feeling old!

How much of history is myth?

We know Christopher Columbus didn't discover America. Did you know that a guy named John Hanson was really the first President? Can you think of any other myths that we've been taught as fact?

    Ginnungagap

According to legend this was the yawning void that existed before everything. At one end was ice and the other extreme heat-much like the earth's climate. This was back in the 15th century so it's not likely they knew about the entire earth's climate.

    9/11

This is a weekend to reflect and remember ten years ago. I just wish it wasn't overloaded on TV. I think there is such a thing as too much being not an honor. A new generation of kids will now have to be taught at (probably) too young an age.

    Toddlers and tiaras

Or as I like to think of it 'Moms who want their daughters to be hookers.' Any fans out there? I surely am not. I think most of those parents should be shot. Just watched the 'Dolly Parton' episode and the mother spent most of the time pointing out her own trophies and not her daughter's.

    Dagda

I like this guy. He had a magic club that killed with one end and brought back to life with the other. His cauldron had neverending food and he had a roasting pig that never ran out. He was the god of life, death, banquets, war and magic. If you think about it he sounds pretty familiar.

    I love this forum!

I know I don't get here enough but this is the one message board that always makes me happy. I'm always learning new stuff and all the people seem to be really good and actual human beings (not always the case on message boards). So thank you all!

    Psyche

I had thought there was more to the myth than this: http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psyche_%28mythology%29 I would've thought Psyche was more into mind games or something considering how her name was used from then on. Anyone else have any info?

    Women

I think it's great that the women were the shamans as opposed to the men that are the heads in religion and even mythology. Probably because the men were always off at war marauding. :)

    Shopping mall stories

I'm sure some of you have heard the one about the girl who was in a shopping mall with her friends and a stranger came up, stuck her with a needle and helped her outside-never to be seen again. This was big back in the late '70s and early '80s.

    Alice in wonderland

Does anyone see how many myths could be started from the book "Alice in Wonderland". Out of this book you could get parables also. If a religion could be started from "Dyanetics" I think it'd be a far more interesting religion if AIW was the basis.

    Orpheus and lot

There have been a few posts here comparing mythology to the Bible. I think the story of Orpheus looking back at Eurydice while rescuing her from Hades compares almost exactly to Lot turning into a pillar of salt.

    Kokopelli

Kokopelli is a myth about a magical hunchback who traveled the land. There are cave etchings dating back over 3000 years ago about him. I know there's a legend in Mexican history that features a hunchback. Does anyone know it?
