Ragnarök

The Norse mythology is one of the few mythologies I know of having a legend about the death of the gods. "Ragnarök" (translated as the "final destiny of the gods" or the "doom of the gods") is a series of future events mentioned in the Poetic Edda. These events include: a great battle foretold to ultimately result in the death of a number of major godly figures (such as Odin, Thor, Týr, Freyr, Heimdall, and Loki), the occurrence of various natural disasters, and the submersion of the world in water.

So, basically, this is the end of the world according to the Norse people...? The world isn't destroyed by gods, but rather gods die along with the world...

Yes, that is it.
But a new world does emerge from the old.
It will be ruled by Balder, who will come back from the dead.
He will be joined by the children of the previous gods. They will live in a heaven called Gimli.
Humans will repopulate the earth because two survived during Ragnarok (they hid in the tree Yggdrasil, which sheltered them).

If you are interested in Norse mythology, then help VuduPins Productions make a film based off of the Norse myths of Baldur's deaths. The film is called "Baldur's Dreams" and is centered around Odin, Frigg, Baldur, and Loki. Before we can begin filming, we need to raise funds. Please help us and go to this site and donate money. Spread the word and help this film get made. Every penny counts. Thanks!

Good luck with the move, it sounds like fun! It's a beautiful story really, the death of the gods. I'd like to think the gods would go down with the world they ruled. Anyone know some good books to read about the Ragnarok myths to learn more?

Read the stories again. The Ragnarok is the last one. I think it's a fake. It does not match the style of the previous stories. It also has a curious Christian overtones. Really, read them again and be mindful of the style of writing and the attitude in which it was written. It does not match. It was an add on long time ago. Probably by a monk translating things.... I think it should be removed from the Norse Sagas.

Ragnarok may have some Christian influence in it, but I do not believe it is an interpolation by a monk.
Snorri included the story in his Edda because like the other myths, he was trying to preserve them for
future scaldic poets before they would be lost forever.

Is that how the online game "Ragnarok" was conceived and played? It was based on that story? It has been a popular online game for the young and old alike for many years now, I did not know there was such a story.

It must have been.
As a fellow gamer I have noticed over the years that alot of inspiration for video games comes from mythology.

Should we take Ragnarok literally? The way the world is going it seems a collapse of “life as we know it” is well on its way. Perhaps a new reconstruction or cleansing is inevitable? There is quite a bit of reality and truth in Mythology.

The cause of Ragnarok seems, from the sources, to be a breakdown of morality among the gods.
We can still learn from it, even if it will not happen literally.
Today, the problem of our continued existence seems to be a greater respect and understanding of our planet than anything else.

There are a few misunderstandings regarding Ragnarok because most folks take only Snorri's version into account. It does not find validation in the Elder Edda. The three roots of Yggdrasil are in the Under World ruled by Hel, who is not Loki's daughter but the Norn known as Urd. Lif and Lifthrasir do not climb up in Yggdrasil and hide waiting for Ragnarok to be over. They live in the Under World alongside their children, with Balder who is to be their god, learning his teachings. When Ragnarok is over a new world will not be created, but the Under World will wise rise up out from under the sea already peopled with men and gods..
